Little Free Library Week

It's time to celebrate Little Free Library Week! As an avid reader and librarian in training, I adore little free libraries and the community that is built around them. I recently joined a Facebook group for little free libraries, and it is amazing to see what they build and grow in their neighborhoods. Plus, it's so fun to celebrate little accomplishments with everyone. There are several little libraries near my work, though there are none near my home, so this week, I visited two different spots and rotated out the one in my office. Every week, I take a walk to a nearby local coffee shop that takes almost exactly an hour to walk over, order my coffee, and walk back, which has proven to be a great way to spend my lunch break. I get sunlight, fresh air, coffee, exercise, and more often than not, a new read! Normally, I do these on Tuesdays, but since it's Little Free Library Week, I figured I'd start off my week right and take my walk on Mondays.

First, I grabbed a book from my little free library that I noticed has not moved in a while to trade. I grabbed a poetry book that had been donated by one of my students (I took this picture after my trip, so unfortunately, the book is not pictured).

Then, I stopped by the coffee shop and browsed their bookshelves while waiting for my drink. I grabbed Watership Down by Richard Adams and Moonwalking with Einstein by Joshua Foer. They have a huge selection, though a majority of it is history books (not that I'm complaining).

After grabbing two books, which is one more than I donated, so I'll have to make it up next week, I headed off to the nearest little free library. It was less than a 5-minute walk, and it had recently been restocked, so there was a wonderful selection! I primarily work with college students, and I often try to have a variety of things in the library in my office, but they primarily read fiction, so I traded out Moonwalking with Einstein by Joshua Foer with A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins.

I hope to one day have a little free library outside my home and contribute to this wonderful community, but for now, I will keep doing as I have been doing and spread the word about little free libraries!
